White Island Race – Amendment to Sailing Instructions

The race committee has amended the Sailing Instructions for White Island Race.

Section 4 stated the race was on 15th November.  This is incorrect.  The race is to be held on SATURDAY 16th November starting at 0800.

Legends update

My Legends Regatta has just finished.

All boats, skippers and crew had a testing time getting to the island with a strong westerly developing into a 35knot plus blast for the finish.  Hence, boats coming in later were directed to finish at Coralie Bay to avoid the lumpy crossing from Opito Bay to the island.

The westerly blew most of the weekend and the fleet gathered at Coralie Bay for the Saturday prizegiving after another boisterous race around the island.

The change to hold the Sunday race earlier resulted in more boats competing and attending the prize giving in the cove.

The final leg home to Tauranga provided the best sailing of the weekend with a moderate North Westerly allowing some boats to fly spinnakers to whole way.

Important information:

PrizeGiving: This will be held at MOSC on Saturday starting at 5.00pm.

Photo Competition:  Entries to this are to be emailed to legends@mmyc.org.nz before Friday 1st November 5.00pm.

Log Sheet (Attachment C) is to be emailed to legends@mmyc.org.nz before 12.00pm Thursday 31st, as per the sailing instructions.

Winter Series 2019

It has been a winter of glorious sailing, so far. The forecast for this Sunday doesn’t look inspiring but Saturday should be good for the 2 Handed Series.

Not Negotiable on a gentle run.

Winter Series 2019 – Dates and details

The 2019 winter series dates have been set!

Find the details here:http://www.mmyc.org.nz/winter-series/

This year, we are trying a slightly different format.  We will have two divisions split according to spinnaker racing and no extra racing.

We hope to see boats out that would not want to have to fly spinnakers, but enjoy being out on the water for a bit of healthy competition.

All races are Mark Foy start so there is none of the start line jostling that can put your boat in precarious situations.

ISLAND CRUISE – 9th -10th March

The weekend of 9th March is the date for the next big sailing event.

We hope that the island cruise will be a mini Legends – a good reason to have a weekend away with fellow yachties from the club.

The destination is always weather dependant but options include Mayor, Motiti and Motuhoa.

The Brief programme is:

Friday 8th or Saturday9th – Cruise out to the island for a get together on board with other sailors.

Saturday 9th – An idle morning (or late arrival for those wanting to leave on Saturday)  and possibility of afternoon there and back race.  Social evening to follow.

Sunday  10th – Cruise home.

Let us know if you intend to join us by email to:  Info@mmyc.org.nz

Island Beach Cricket!

And now for something completely different.

March 23rd will see the inaugural Mount Maunganui Yacht Club Island Beach Cricket challenge.

The concept is a simple one – to celebrate the especially low tide on Saturday March 23 the stumps will go down on the new bank in the middle of the harbour that the dredging has courteously created.  Two sides will be drawn to oppose each side of low – The Ebbs v The Floods.

Refreshments and some sort of trophy will be awarded at the prize giving to be held at Pilot bay once stumps are drawn.

We are hoping for a fun day out with boats intentionally mooring at the pesky bank for a change.  Start time is 1300 (low tide is 1401 – 0.1m).

Please indicate your intention to attend by emailing:  info@MMYC.org.nz or contacting Doug directly.

Christmas on the Beach 2018

Happy Christmas to all yachties in Mt Maunganui.

We celebrated the year end with a raft up at Omokoroa beach.  The weather was kind and the the water was warm.

5 boats turned up and enjoyed the afternoon sun, drinks and a meal.  The children and Richard Harrison entertained everyone with bombs from the bimini of The Wizard.

The highlight of the afternoon was the inaugural coke bottle boat race.  Many well thought out craft appeared – largely adhering the “no motor’s, no glue’ rules.

The prize (of a trophy and toy bottle of rum) was taken by Gary in the multi hull division.

Bottle boat winners

River Rebel, Hanse Free, The Wizzard, Pork Chop and Rahona.

The next adventure event will be Saturday 12 January or Sunday 13 January.  Details to be provided.

The dates of the scheduled events are shown under the calendar here, but each event will be organised according to the weather and number of participants in the week beforehand.

Register your interest in participating by emailing info@mmyc.org.nz to ensure that you receive the updates.
