Windarra RNI

I’ll post my rambligs here from now on.

After a hard couple of days we finally arrived at Mounganui the finish of Leg one. It was a tough first leg but for all the wrong reasons, the wind just would not play ball for very long. We had at great start gybing through the fleet to be in the top 5 at one stage early on. We then decided to go around the outside of the hen and chicken Islands, the wind got up around 10:30 and reaching with the big kite we were seeing between 8 and 9 knots constantly, this unfortunately got the better of us and we blew the top out of the big kite after a few hours of that. By morning we were looking famous surrounded by a lot of boats from the division above us, this was not to last however as the sea became a vacuum and every bit of wind disappeared. We bobbed around about 5 miles from Cape Brett for most of the day while all the boats we passed during the night either sailed around us or parked up alongside. The wind finally came up just afer dark and we were able to slowly get underway. We sailed through the night in light winds. Then saw a group of boats parked up just after the Cavali Islands but managed to squeeze enough out of the dying breeze to slip around them past Stevenson’s Island and head into Doubtless Bay we passed another couple of boats as we cranked onto the wind and were swapping tacks with the 45footer Ilex, we were in sight of the finish line when the wind again disappeared, but this time it quickly filled in from the opposite direction favouring a lot of those boats we had fought so hard to pass, never mind though we ended up 4th on PHRF so are ok with that the next one is the biggest leg down to wellington and with a few headwinds forecast things may get interesting. Race start is 10:00 a.m. Monday.
